Jose Gilberto “Gil” Mendoza, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94 on October 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 11, 1931, in San Francisco, California, to Dolores Zuniga and Librado Mendoza, Gil lived a full and spirited life devoted to family, service, and laughter.
A proud United States Marine, Gil served honorably as a mortarman during the Korean War and bravely fought at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in 1950. His courage, loyalty, and resilience as a Marine shaped the man he would become—a man of strength, integrity, and humor.
After returning home from the war, Gil built a long and accomplished career. He began as a machinist with General Dynamics before finding his calling in the insurance industry, where he worked as a Farmers Insurance agent for 30 years until his retirement.
A resident of Chula Vista since 1968, Gil was a cherished member of the community and a lifelong member of the VFW, Chosin Few Marine Corps Veterans organization and the Elks Lodge. He was an avid cyclist, loved music, and never missed his favorite novelas, aka “wrestling”. Gil had an undeniable gift for bringing people together, often the first to tell a funny story or buy the first round of tequila and raise a glass for a toast. His humor and warmth brightened every gathering.
Gil was preceded in death by his beautiful and loving wife of 60 years, Gloria M. Mendoza; his parents, Librado and Dolores Mendoza; his brother, Robert “Bob” Mendoza; his son, Ralph “Allan” Mendoza; and his grandson, Evan.
He is survived by his daughters, Lorraine "Lori" McGuffie and Cynthia Diaz; his grandchildren, who called him "Papa", Jeremy, Shawn-Michael, Sonya, Christopher, Elizabeth, Dustin, and Erin; and his 12 great-grandchildren. His family will forever remember his laughter, his stories, and the love he gave so freely.
Gil was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed. His memory and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A memorial service for Gil will be held Monday, January 5, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Funeraria del Angel Chula Vista, 753 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Following the memorial service, there will be a military honors burial service at 2:00 PM at the Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122.
Following will be his "Celebration of Life" at location TBD. Please follow for location/time.
