Born on October 8th, 1937 in Miskolc, Hungary, Klara grew up the eldest of four sisters. A swimmer from the beginning, she competed with the Hungarian National Team, missing an opportunity to represent her country in the Olympics due to her involvement in the Hungarian Revolution against the USSR, fleeing bloodshed and communist rule for a new life in the United States.
Settling in Washington DC, Klara soon became known as the first female barber in town, working hard as a single parent to support her young son, Steven, and self. Upon meeting and falling for Richard A. Smith, the three forged a bond that would last a lifetime. Richard helped Klara to become a US citizen and, in 1963, they were married. Her youngest son, Scott, arrived the next year.
As a wife of a military man, the family traveled the globe, with Klara tending to their needs. Settling in San Diego, Klara forged a life devoted to family, volunteer work with the elderly and as a member of the Hungarian House in Balboa Park. A wonderful cook, her kitchen was always open to anyone wishing to dine, and loved feeding the many friends of her two boys.
Klára is survived by her sister: Ilona, two sons: Steven and Scott, and by her daughter-in-law: Mary Jane.
