Laura Cruz Plaza was born in the municipality of Loiza, the town of Loiza Aldea, Puerto Rico; on February 15, 1917 to her parents. She and her fraternal twin brother, were the youngest of six children born to the marriage. Her family and friends lovingly knew her as Chumi.
Since an early age, she suffered the loss of her parents, twin brother, and other family members.
Laura was outgoing and active, and loved music and dancing. Laura would share that as a young woman, she never missed a chaperoned dance and always had a new dress sewn for the occasion.
Mama Laura enjoyed singing, and could be heard singing during the day and evening.
She resided with her elder sisters after losing her mother. During this time, Laura met and married her husband Francisco (Deceased) in 1941. The marriage produced 4 children. Her husband came to the United States first to obtain employment. He then sent for her. They settled in Brooklyn, New York.
Laura’s new life in NY was very different from the life she knew in Puerto Rico; and the transition was difficult on her.
After working for several years, she settled into being a housewife. Laura was a very loving, caring and self-sacrificing mother, daughter, sister, wife and friend. She gave much love to her children and husband.
Mama Laura was raised as a catholic, but surrendered her heart to Jesus Christ in 2004, at the age of 87. She became a Born-Again Christian, being baptized the same year. Laura loved The Lord with all of her heart. Every night she would be seen reading her Bible and praying. Her favorite Psalm is 91.
Laura resided in New York for many years, then spent several years in Puerto Rico, finally relocating to California.
She lived with her daughter Laura for many years; and became a resident of Mount Miguel Covenant Village the last years of her life.
She went home to be with The Lord on Monday, June 22, 2020; at 103 years of age.
Laura leaves behind many loving memories. She was an avid storyteller, and would share many of her life experiences. She will be deeply missed. We are saddened by the absence of Laura’s quiet presence, but are rejoicing that she transitioned peacefully to heaven.
She is now with The Lord; and with her loved ones and family in heaven.
