

Lawrence Edward Wright was born August 17, 1928 in Burlington, Iowa and died of congestive heart failure on November 2, 2013 in San Diego, California. Larry was the fourth of five children, the son of Raymond Wright and Gertrude Brower. Larry married Evelyn Allender in 1948. They had two children, Lynn and Penny; and divorced in 1965. Larry married Betty Sinclair on July 4, 1974, and she died in June 2004.
Larry is survived by his loving partner and travel companion of ten years, Bernice Rolfson; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and John Morgan; stepson Gordon Robertson; sister Jeannie Streeter and husband, Jerry; grandson, Wesley Morgan and wife Tiffany; grandson Michael and wife Leslie; six great grandchildren: Robin, Patrick, Cash, Jack, Lane, and Makayla; and two great great grandchildren: Max and Penny; brother-in-law, Clarence “Red” Logan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by ex-wife Evelyn Wright Rowe; wife, Betty Sinclair Wright; daughter, Penny Jeannie Wright; brother, Wayne Wright; sisters, Margie Owens, and Leota Kerr Logan.
Larry attended high school in Iowa and joined the Navy at the age of 17 in 1945. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a postal clerk on the USS William M. Wood DD715. After leaving the Navy in 1949, Larry went to work for Montgomery Ward in San Diego. He worked in a lumberyard and as a journeyman cabinetmaker; and retired as fire chief for General Atomics in San Diego in 1981 after more than 25 years following open-heart surgery.
In retirement, Larry enjoyed golf, sailing remote control boats and traveling – most especially ocean cruises. He chronicled his travels with pictures and mementos of his ports of call – from branding and rodeos in Montana to dancers in Bora Bora. He spent winters in Yuma, Arizona and summers in San Diego, California. At Cocopah, Larry and his friend, David Todd, organized the 9 Holers golf league where he served at its first president.
Those who knew Larry will remember his kind heart and thoughtfulness, quick wit, and his competitive card and game playing.
A memorial service is planned at Cocopah Resort in Yuma, Arizona, his winter home, for Thursday November 7 at 2:00 p.m. mdt with interment at Miramar Veterans Memorial Cemetery, San Diego, California on November 18th at 1:30pm.
