

Margarito "Picho" Portillo, 87 years old, of National City, passed away on July 10, 2017. Picho, as affectionately known, was a native San Diegan whose reputation of being a hard worker was admired and respected by family and friends alike. Born to Delfino and Juana Portillo, he learned at a young age to stand out among his fifteen siblings. Picho was also known to play as hard as he worked. His charismatic personality and joy for life easily made him a popular fellow.
In 1951, Picho answered the call of war and joined the U.S Army to serve in the Korean War which earned him a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. He came home as a honored veteran and met the love of life, Maria Luisa. On August 23, 1956, he married Maria Luisa, or "Liza" as she was called by all. They were blessed with forty-five years of marriage and three children.
During his lifetime Picho wore many hats in his choice of careers. After his stint in the Army he returned to his job of being a butcher. Next, he opened up a Mexican Restaurant with his Mother, Juana Portillo in National City. He was well known for his "Menudo". After the passing of his beloved mother, Picho and Liza continued the operations of the restaurant. After the sale of the business, he kept busy by doing construction work. Though he had medical issues throughout his life, he was a fighter and always seemed to overcome his set-backs.
He was an avid golfer and great jitter-bug dancer. In August of 2001 Picho was predeceased by his beloved Liza. He missed her terribly but kept busy with his grandchildren and his hobbies. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. One of his favorite pass times was hanging out with his buddies, listening to music and enjoying a few beers at Café La Maze, the famous and iconic steak house-pub in National City.
Surviving Picho are sons; Christopher Portillo, Ronald Portillo and daughter Laura Portillo. In addition, surviving siblings are Abel Portillo, Patrick Portillo, Gilbert Portillo, Ludy Garcia, Irene Villapando, Wilma Gomez and Myrna Macias. His legacy includes four grandchildren; Anthony Portillo, Christopher Portillo, Michael Portillo and Yvonne Portillo. One great-grandchild; Emily Portillo.
A celebration to honor Picho's life will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Hunphrey, 753 Broadway, Chula Vista, California 91910 on Saturday, July 22, 2017 starting at 1:00 p.m. Honors will be presented under the auspices of The United States Army.
