Marie Currie (nee Moss) was born in London, England, on August 15, 1924, one of eight children of Elizabeth and Albert Moss. Her primary school education was interrupted by WWII when she became an ambulance assistant during the London “Blitz”. After the war ended, Marie married Arthur “Tim” Turner in 1946, who was trained and working as an aircraft engineer. Tim's work took them initially to Bournemouth, England, where he worked for De Haviland Aircraft Company. However, after the war, with research money in England limited, most aircraft development was now being done in the U.S.. In 1956, Tim became part of the “brain drain” and the young couple left England for San Diego, California, where Tim went to work for Convair/General Dynamics. They were accompanied by their three children: Nicholas, Anthony, and Angela. A fourth child, Christopher, was born in San Diego in 1963.
After the death of Tim in 1967, Marie married old family friend and one of Tim's colleagues at De Haviland, Archie Currie, in 1968. They set up a home in the Point Loma area for the next 36 years. In 1970, Marie completed adult education classes, passing the GED exam and receiving the high school diploma that was denied to her many years earlier. She then began and completed two years of college classes, following her lifelong love for education.
Marie's second love was travel. In the later stages of Archie's career as a Rohr representative, Archie and Marie were able to travel extensively and live in various countries of Europe and Asia.
During her lifetime, Marie kept in close contact with her family in England, while raising her own in San Diego. She was a constant supporter of the elderly and handicapped. She worked for many years as a coordinator for Meals on Wheels in San Diego.
Marie is predeceased by her second husband, Archie, and her first son, Nicholas. She is survived by her step-daughter, Mandy Hokett, her daughter, Angela Finnerty, and her sons, Anthony and Christopher Turner.
