Mary Lou was born in Chicago, Illinois where she attended Fenger High School and later studied music at Beloit College in Wisconsin. She had a happy childhood with her family, parents Harold and Mary Evans, brothers Harold and Gerald, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She met her husband, Tom Dyke, in Chicago and they married on June 24, 1950. They later moved to San Diego, CA, where they were happily married for almost 50 years until his death in 1999. They shared a love of music and enjoyed singing together at the piano while she played, attending performances of all kinds including symphony, opera, theater and the SDSU Aztecs football team. Mary Lou performed both as a soloist and in many choral groups throughout her life, including church choirs and the San Diego Sweet Adelines.
Mary Lou and Tom enjoyed raising their 3 children: Amy, Mary and Ben, and took many family vacations throughout the western United States that instilled a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors.
Mary Lou had a long career as a federal civil servant, first at the Naval Training Center and later at the Veterans Administration Hospital. After she retired, she became a Master Gardener, sharing her love of flowers and gardens with the San Diego community. She also enjoyed travel and took several trips in her retirement including England, the American South, Chicago and a trip to Vienna and the Slovak Republic where her mother was born.
Mary Lou was an animal lover who adopted six rescued greyhounds over the last 12 years and gave them all a loving home.
She was a warm and generous person who enriched the lives of everyone around her. Mary Lou often commented on how much she loved her life and her home and truly enjoyed and made the most of each day she was with us. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.
Mary Lou is survived by her children: Ben Dyke; Mary Hoverman and her husband Dale; Amy Raymond and her husband Roger; grandchildren: Ryan Hoverman and his daughter Annabel; Kristen Shultz and her husband Brice; and Meagan Raymond and her sons Gavyn and Vincent; and brother Harold Evans and his wife Bette.
