He spent his younger years jumping at every opportunity to get involved in sports. Whether it was playing football in the mud with other kids from the block on a rainy thanksgiving, or joining track field, football, and basketball at Monta Vista high school. Upon graduating high school he’d attended De Anza college where he continued to play football and obtaining an AA in criminal justice. He’d later enlist in the military where he’d serve in the Navy five years and sail to many countries. After receiving honorable discharge he’d receive medals for his service protecting the fellow sailors he served with.
After leaving the military he’d spend nearly 30 years as a security guard.
After meeting Laura Chavez and falling in love he’d move in with her and her daughter, get married and move up to Sacramento where’d their son would later be born. Eventually they’d part ways and move back to San Diego where they’d mutually raise their son. When not working Phillip enjoyed spending time with his son, listening to Jazz and Motown music, watching vintage movies/tv shows and sports, going fishing, playing: basketball, baseball, and ping pong with his son, and baking chocolate chip cookies.
After living undiagnosed for some time, Phillip would be diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 60 and battle through numerous sessions chemotherapy and radiation therapies. After fighting for nearly three years and exhausting all cancer treatments possible he’d breathe his last at the La Jolla veteran’s hospital on June 8, 2025.
He was known for being reserved and quite always telling his son to be mentally strong and to have morals, values, and integrity
He leaves behind a son, ex-wife, daughter-in-law, 2 sisters, and 3 brothers. He goes on to reunite with his grandparents, brother, and best friend.
