October 25, 1973 – January 5, 2019
On January 5th, 2019 we said our final goodbyes to our beloved son, Ian Novotny, at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
Ian was born in Mtn. View, CA on October 25th, 1973 to Dave and Kathy (Taylor) Novotny. He grew up in Santa Clara, CA, enjoying all the activities of a typical 1980’s kid living in the suburbs – going to Star Wars movies, skateboarding, swimming, studying karate, playing soccer, and practicing his magic tricks. Ian attended Lynhaven Elementary School, Monroe Middle School, Blackford High School in San Jose and graduated from Prospect High School in Saratoga. In 2000 he moved to Granite Bay.
In the spring of his senior year in 1992, Ian became very ill; after months of testing and consultation, he was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a chronic liver disease. With the support of the medical team at UC Davis GI Department, especially Dr. Christopher Bowlus, Ian was able to persevere through the limitations and discomfort of living with a chronic illness.
Despite the physical challenges, Ian faced the world with joy and determination. He attended De Anza College and Sierra College and worked as his health permitted. He remained active in his Christian faith and was blessed with the fellowship he received at The Family Church in Roseville. A self-professed nerd, Ian was passionate about Star Trek, Dungeons and Dragons, Renaissance Fairs, and celebrating his Celtic roots. He loved his family, his church, and all the friends he made on his journey.
In addition to his father and mother, Ian leaves behind his sister, Angie Novotny; nieces, Stephanie and Kiersten Villarreal; many aunts and uncles, including Lucille Bragga, Nancy Taylor, and Norman Novotny; and dozens of cousins and second cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to PSC Partners Seeking a Cure (www.pscpartners.org) or the UC Davis Mind Institute.
