At the end of WWII she met and married Juan Martin Romo and they moved to Antioch, CA in 1947 to begin their life together. Maria was a wonderful cook and holiday family meals with her Mexican dishes were anxiously anticipated feasts. She was a devout Catholic and was very active in the Antioch Holy Rosary Church, prior to moving to El Paso, Texas. She was president of Our Lady of Guadalupe Society for many years, organizing huge fiestas for Our Lady’s celebration in December.
Maria was honored in 1975 by the Contra Costa County United Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations and awarded a “Humanitarian Services Award”, for all her time and effort as an individual for the general health, welfare and progress of the Spanish Speaking Community. Maria was also instrumental in the creation of the “Mano Amiga Club”, which meant “helping hand”. The sole purpose of the club was to hold fund raising activities to aid misfortunate east county residents. (Contra Costa County)
Maria was loving, caring and she whole-heartedly cherished her family who meant the world to her. She taught all of the children to believe in their faith through prayer. She also loved to crochet, word finds, sing and Bingo.
