(February 9, 1929 - September 22, 2018)
Alfonso Franklin Brady passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side in San Bruno, CA on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the age of 89 years. Alfonso (Al) was tough, hardworking, smart and extremely disciplined. He was a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Al enjoyed the simple things in life — from reading the newspaper with his daily coffee to listening to classic jazz music, to sharing stories from his past.
Al was born in Flint, Michigan on February 9, 1929. His mother Fredricka Mildred (Cook) Brady was an entrepreneur owner of Freddie’s Beauty Shop, and his father, Charles Brady, was an auto assembly worker at Buick City, a Division of General Motors Corporation. Alfonso had three siblings — Morris Vernon Brady, Shirley (Brady) Collins, and Delano Brady. Alfonso attended and graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1946 where he was a star track athlete and actively involved in youth ministries. After graduation, Alfonso worked for General Motors Corp in Flint as a Punch Press Operator from 1947-1950.
On October 4, 1951, Alfonso was drafted into active service with the United States Armed Forces. While on active duty, he was deployed to the Republic of Korea during the Korean War. Alfonso received the Korean Service Medal (KSM) and United Nations Service Medal (UNSM) awards from President Harry Truman for performing his duty during the war. On September 11, 1953, Alfonso transferred to the Enlisted Reserve Corps and was honorably discharged on October 3, 1959.
After the Korean War, Alfonso attended the University of Michigan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955. While attending college as a full-time student, he worked a full-time job and commuted to Ann Arbor from Flint five days a week. Despite the challenges he faced, Alfonso graduated with honors. He took great pride in being a University of Michigan Alumnus and was a die-hard U of M Wolverine sports fan throughout his life.
Soon after graduating from the University of Michigan, Alfonso moved to San Francisco, California where he worked for the United States Postal Service as a Foreman for 40 years. While working there in the 1970s, he met the love his life, Natividad (Naty) Omega and they were married in May 1980. Alfonso became the stepfather to Natividad’s adopted daughter, Judy Omega and was a central father figure in her life. Alfonso remained married to Naty for 17 years until her passing from breast cancer in 1997.
On December 23, 1980, Alfonso and Naty had their first and only child, Jeremy Alfonso Brady. Al took great joy in being a father. He was a dedicated, loving dad who always put his family first and was present at every milestone in his son’s life — from basketball games and graduations to Jeremy’s marriage to Therese and the birth of his granddaughter Natalie.
Alfonso Brady is survived by his son Jeremy Brady, daughter-in-law Therese Jacinto, stepdaughter Judy (Bulak) Manuel, son-in-law Romeo Manuel, three grandchildren — Natalie Brady, Lindsey Manuel, and Branden Manuel, sister Shirley Collins, brother Delano Brady and host of nieces and nephews: Marjie Diane Miles, Morris Vernon Brady Jr., Kenny Brady, Duane Brady, Shawn Coffey, Fawn (Coffey) Ukpolo, Charles Collins and Bethany Collins.
