Mark McGovern passed away in San Francisco, CA on September 25, 2026 at the age of 62, from complications after heart surgery. He was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1964 to the late Thomas F. McGovern and Camille Tyszka McGovern
Mark loved his life and embraced it fully. He will be long remembered for his devotion to his family, his generosity, his love of travel, and his genuine appreciation for culture, good food, and great wine. He delighted in sharing what he’d learned along the way, insight from his years in the pharmaceutical industry, a story from the road, or a pair of cool shoes. He had a quiet warmth, a quick wit and droll sense of humor, and a wry smile somewhere between skeptical and amused.
Mark was dedicated to his work in medical research. He began his journey on the front lines as a traveling ICU nurse. This first-hand experience shaped the leader he became: persistent, compassionate, and driven by a responsibility to science, patients and their families.
Mark moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1999 where he met Thuan, the love of his life. They were together for 25 years until his untimely passing.
Mark is survived by his loving husband, Thuan Nguyen, his sister Cynthia McGovern, his brother Tom McGovern and his sister-in-law Katie McGovern, and nieces Rosemary and Lauren. Mark is also remembered by many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 10 am at St. Brendan’s Church–29 Rockaway Avenue, San Francisco. There will be a celebration of life to be announced in early summer 2027.
No flowers or memorial contributions are necessary. If you do wish to make a memorial contribution, you can donate to Mark’s high school, St. Joseph’s Prep : https://www.sjprep.org/support-the-prep. Gifts can be designated in memory of Mark McGovern.
