
She was born on April 14, 1936 in Kuala Lumpor, Malaysia. As a young child, she lived through the Japanese occupation during World War II. During British rule, she worked for the British government until 1957 when Malaysia gained independence at which time, she worked for the Malayan Armed Forces and was ultimately awarded a medal by the King of Malaysia for her work in the Department of Labor.
In the mid-80’s, Soon Yee Hong and her husband, Hong Hing Thim, immigrated to the United States of America. She worked as a clerk for a plant nursery based in Half Moon Bay. In 2000, she survived her husband after his sudden passing. Although she had multiple recurrences of lymphoma, she survived each relapse which was a testament of her spirit – a fighter through and through.
She is survived by the following: Siblings - Ho Bert Kien, Ho Wai Fong, Ho Wai Chan, and Ho Bert Moh; Children – Linda Phang, Bernard Hong, and Chris Hong; Grandchildren – Jillan Hong, Shaun Hong, Kelvin Phang, Jamie Hong, and Stella Hong; Great Grandchildren – Avery Xiao and Colette Tam; and Daughter/Son-in-law(s) – Kong Phang, Michelle Hong and Sue Wu. Daughter in Law Tawny and Son in law David.
A funeral service will be held at 10am on October 15, 2023 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Colma, CA.
