Abner Wayne DuBose

Abner Wayne DuBose, age 97, of Colorado City, passed away in a local nursing home on August 3, 2019. He was born May 8, 1922 in Floydada, Texas, to Abner and Inez Mitchell DuBose. He graduated from Aspermont High School then enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1941. On furlough, he returned home to marry the love of his life, Lenetta Patton on May 9, 1942. She soon joined him at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, which began his long military career; also serving in Gila Bend and Ajo Arizona; Guam; Atwater, California; Denver, Colorado; Fort Worth, Texas; and Jacksonville, Arkansas. He retired from the Air Force in 1965 with a rank of Major. The couple then moved to Colorado City, buying partnerships in the John Deere and David Browne tractor business. In 1972, they moved to Abilene where they sold Real Estate and enjoyed a bowling league before retiring to the Stubblefield farm near Colorado City in 1983. Wayne and Lenetta liked playing games and watching ballgames with friends. They loved traveling, with extended stays in Colorado, California, and Zapata, Texas, and even a tour through Europe. They made life-long friends wherever they went. They were proud members of the First Presbyterian Church in Colorado City. They loved the Wallace Senior Citizens lunch program, and the local school’s Veterans Day programs. Wayne was always a true patriot, raising his American flag and saluting it every morning. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of almost 77 years, Lenetta Dubose; his parents; a brother Virgel DuBose; daughter Melodie Ann DuBose; and great-great granddaughter Alaina Raphael. Wayne is survived by daughter Jerry and husband Ron Petersen of Granbury, granddaughters Sherri and husband Will Watson of Fort Worth, and Karen (Bee) and husband Terry Kuehner of Benbrook; Great grandchildren Amanda Kuehner, Brittany and husband Josh Keller, Christopher Villarreal and wife Amira, Ashley Villarreal, and Zach Villarreal; great-great grandchildren, Marissa Raphael, Clark Villarreal, and Liam Mathis. Wayne is also survived by adopted family David and Melody Stubblefield of Colorado City, Kamie and husband Nathaniel Brown of Lubbock, KayLee and husband Lorin Wolf of Brownwood, and Krista and husband Kaleb Free of Colorado City, Great-grandchildren include Weston, Wyatt and Waverlee Wolf, Kight, Kaxton, Kavitt and Kovax Free, and Azariah Brown. He is additionally survived by a sister-in-law Ruby DuBose of Corpus Christi and sister-in-law Maudill Webb of San Diego, California, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, August 9th from 10-11am at Kiker Seale funeral Home. Graveside services, under the direction of Kiker Seale Funeral Home, will be at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, at 2:00pm on Friday, August 9th, with interment to follow. Memorials made be made to the Wallace Senior Citizens Center in Colorado City, or the charity of your choice.
