

Ellen Marie "Honey" Nicholson Smoot passed away on Friday, October 5th in Waco. She was born July 1, 1924 in Spokane, Washington to Carl and Marguerite Nicholson. She graduated from Louis and Clark High School in 1942. She attended Washington State University and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While at WSU, she met a soldier from Texas, Joseph Henry (Joe) Smoot. When he returned from Europe at the end of WWII, they were married in Spokane on February 9, 1942. After a honeymoon to San Francisco, the couple moved to Austin in order for Joe to continue his studies in engineering at the University of Texas. While in Austin their daughter Mary was born. A few years later her sons Hank and Carl joined the family. Honey lived in Colorado City and Big Spring during the next 60 years. She had been a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Big Spring for the past 50 years.
Honey volunteered at Dora Roberts Rehab. Center in Big Spring for many years. She loved traveling to many different places in the US but her favorite destinations were Las Vegas and Hawaii. In addition to raising her three children, she loved to read, work in her garden, make apricot preserves from the apricots grown in her yard, shell pecans(also grown in her yard), shop with her grandchildren, play bridge, paint and crochet.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 2006 and son, Hank, in 2010, as well as her parents and two brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Gingerich (husband Tom) of Waco and her son Carl Smoot (wife Olga) of Midland. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews in Texas and Washington.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday at Colorado City Cemetery. Services are under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
