He was born on September 1, 1936 in Erath County Texas to the late Ernest Dunson Sr and Thelma Hurley Dunson.
Ernest was an honest hard-working man who was very family oriented. He spent his life working in the oil and gas industry since the age of 17, retiring as a geophysical consultant. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who took pride in being able to provide for his family and give them the gift of loving the outdoors. In his youth he grew up with 3 older sisters and a younger brother on a farm learning hard work. If you knew Ernest you knew he did not beat around the bush and was very straight forward at getting his point across. As he got older he found solace in ranching, sitting on the front porch with his wife and watching the wildlife go by. His ranch was his own little slice of paradise and that is what he called it. In his spare time he also enjoyed hunting, shooting, and doing whatever he could outdoors.
Ernest is survived by his wife Gwen Dunson of Colorado City, by sons Trey Dunson and wife Patty of Midland, David Dunson and wife Paulette of Tolar, and Todd Dunson and wife Lee of Stephenville, by daughters LaDonna Sims and husband Laney of Onalaska, Tina Furlow and husband Darryl of Jasper, and Julie Damron of Granbury, as well as by 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 2 nephews. He is also survived by one sister Marie Spees of Fort Worth.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, by his first wife Mary Dunson, a daughter Debbie Duncan, by a brother Lloyd Dunson, and by 2 sisters Nell Butler and Ruth Keeney.
A memorial service will be held for Ernest on Saturday, January 28th at 2pm in the Spade Cemetery, with a celebratory gathering to follow at the ranch.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kiker Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City
