He was born in Sweetwater, Texas to Willis Ray and Ester Elenor Philquist Powell on October 29, 1937.
George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He married Rachel Fuller in Colorado City on September 19, 2014. He spent his life as a rancher and an appraiser for farms and ranches in the area. Those that knew George knew that he was an avid TCU Horned Frogs fan. Many people in the area were lucky to have played a round of golf with him (including some pros) or learned from him as he was a scratch golfer and not afraid to coach someone who struggled on the course. In his spare time he enjoyed an occasional road trip, having people over for barbecues, or telling a great story.
George is survived by his wife Rachel Powell of Colorado City, sons Matthew Sheppard of New Orleans, Louisianan, Trey Sheppard of Fort Worth, and Michael Swann and significant other Marlene of Colorado City, and by daughters; Trisha Uselton and husband Randy of Wiberley, Nikol Bolin and husband Cade of Colorado City, and Kristie Pennington and husband Frankie of Big Spring, as well as by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Willis and Ester Powell, by a son Kirk Evans, and by a brother Don Powell.
A graveside service for George will be held on Friday, July 17th at 3pm in the Colorado City Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kiker Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City
Those wishing may make a donation to All Saints Episcopal Church in Colorado City where George was a faithful member for many years.
