After a courageous battle with cancer, Kathryn “Joyce” Saling Womack went to be with her beloved Lord and Glen on March 5, 2010.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado City, TX. Arrangements are being made by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City. Memorials may be given to the Colorado City First United Methodist Church.
Joyce or “Meme” as known to her grandchildren, and many of their friends, was born September 18, 1932 in Colorado City, Texas to Hubert and Jessie Smith Saling. At the age of three her mother died and Joyce along with her sister Helen were raised by their father with the assistance of some very loving friends, the Williams, who became their family. She grew up in Mitchell County, Texas, attending school in Seven Wells and graduating high school in Loraine. On June 16, 1954, she married Glen Womack and they remained lifelong members of the First Methodist church in Colorado City. In 1958, Gary was born and Trey came along in 1963. During these times the extended family of cousins consisted of many boys, who were always together for vacations, sports, fishing and golf. It wasn’t until Gary and Trey married that she got to experience daughters.
Joyce was known for her devotion to her husband, boys, daughter-in-laws, Kim and Pamela, four grandchildren, Molly, Weston, Brett and Brooks and pets, most recently Skipper. She was famous for spoiling them all tremendously. She and Glen never hesitated to drop everything for the sake of their children or grandchildren, be it helping them move, repainting a rent house, watching the grandkid’s sporting events, the chance to care for a child or just sharing a meal with them. In the early years, the families spent many a times in Big Spring, the half way point between C City and Midland, just to have a meal or transfer a child.
Joyce was always up for any challenge and loved to try out new activities. She had many talents that she was always willing to share with others. Sewing, quilting and cooking were her passions--which her family greatly benefited from. She made both of her daughter-in-law-’s wedding dresses. Mealtimes were special family moments filled with camaraderie and friendship and her holiday meals and family gatherings were legendary both for the delicious food and fellowship with friends and family.
Joyce and Glen loved camping and vacations with lifelong friends, Margaret and Billie Earl Roach among others. Lately she traveled with her immediate families, her two last vacations were to New York City and a life-long dream trip to Hawaii.
Her move back to the farm in 2008, alone, after Glen’s death, took great courage. Colorado City was a haven for the family, whereby someone spent almost every weekend at either the ranch or the lake. She loved everything about Mitchell County and it was fitting that she be granted her wish to spend her final days at home.
