Leland LaVerne Craighead was the first of five children born on July 1, 1931 to Jennie Vera and Leland Barron Craighead in Mitchell County, Texas. She grew up and attended school in Colorado City, Texas where upon graduating, she became a phone operator for the local phone company.
LaVerne was on a double date with another friend when she met her future husband Chester Calvin Sprow from Florida. They married August 28, 1950 in Lorraine, Texas. LaVerne and Chester sadly lost a baby daughter, Patsy Darlene on March 31, 1951. Happily, a few short years later, they welcomed a son Randal Calvin Sprow on June 8, 1955 and then a daughter Cheryl Denise Sprow on August 2, 1956.
LaVerne and Chester along with their beautiful young children visited many states and countries early on as a family, as Chester was employed with an oil company which required much traveling. Having traversed extensively, her heart was called home. LaVerne and Chester decided to plant roots in Kennedale, Texas where Randal and Denise grew up and graduated.
After many happy years together, LaVerne sadly lost her husband in April of 1980. She then rejoined the workforce and became an associate at a Fort Worth KMART where she worked for many years until she retired.
LaVerne loved her family dearly. She always made being present at birthday parties, holidays and momentous occasions a priority. She wanted everyone she loved to know how much she cared for them. She also loved cooking and collected many cookbooks throughout the years. It pleased her greatly to know that many of her grand and great grandchildren shared her love of cooking.
LaVerne was called home to our Father in Heaven March 1, 2021. She was deeply loved by all and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her son Randal Calvin Sprow of Ketchum, Idaho; her daughter Cheryl Denise Baker and husband Kenneth Baker of Alvarado, Texas; sisters, GaNell Lemonds of Colorado City, Texas and Quida Elder of Colorado City, Texas; a sister-in-law, Kay Craighead of Colorado City, Texas; three grandchildren, Stephen and Jennifer Baker of Grandview, Texas, Tammy and Kevin Harper of Pantego, Texas, Jennifer and Shawn Smith of Aledo, Texas; nieces and nephews Sharon Garrett, Sheila Elder, Dale Craighead and Curtis Craighead; and nine great grandchildren: Elijah and Ethan Baker; Mae, Owen, Evelyn and Charlotte Harper and Saddie, Sophie and Stanley Smith.

Proverbs 31: 28-31 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
