He was born on August 9, 1952 in Loraine to Marcelo Alvarez Sr. and Juanita Ornelas Alvarez.
Marcelo was a devout catholic man who lived by God’s word putting God and family above all else. If he knew you, you knew he was praying for you even if you didn’t think you needed prayers. He worked hard in life to help in providing for his family. He started working at Fuller Market until he worked for Safeway, once they closed up shop he went back to Fuller’s for a short time until he found his longest held position as the Commissary Manager for TDCJ Wallace Unit. After he retired from the Wallace Unit Marcelo worked for a short time at Kiker Seale Funeral Home as a Funeral Attendant, (and translator when needed). When Marcelo wasn’t working he and his wife surrounded themselves with family, especially the grandchildren. He loved babysitting his grandchildren, and tried to get to every one of their extracurricular activities that he could make.
Marcelo was also a man who believed in service to his community and he was always there to lend a hand when it was needed. He spent many years in the Knights of Columbus, some of which were as the Grand Knight. He was on the Colorado ISD School Board, and spent around 15 years on the City Council for Colorado City. In his spare time he enjoyed being with family, gardening, and camping. Marcelo’s heart of gold, his witty sense of humor, and his warm welcomes will be cherished in our memories for years.
Marcelo is survived by his wife Jessie Alvarez of Colorado City, by sons Jeremy Alvarez and wife Cindy of San Antonio, Anthony Alvarez and wife Jessica of Colorado City, Jamie Alvarez and wife Alison of Colorado City, and David Alvarez and wife Tommie of Colorado City, and by his grandchildren who were his pride and joy; Sky, Robert, Alyssa, Lauren, Bryce, Zoey, Seth, Ramsey, Evyn, Merick, Lex, Inez, and Ian and great-grandchildren Gabriel, Mariah, Christian, Malia, and Makayla. He is also survived by his brother Abel Alvarez and wife Dora of Colorado City, by his sisters Alvinia Rosas of Midland, Adelinda Marquez and husband Manuel of Colorado City, and Alva Franco and husband Roy of Canyon Lake City, as well as by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Marcelo and Juanita Alvarez and by brothers Adam Alvarez, Joe Alvarez, and Jesse Alvarez.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Marcelo was held on Friday, August 27th at 10 am at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church officiated by Father Tony Franco. Pall Bearers were Timothy Marquez, Dion Alvarez, Chris Rosas, Roy Franco, Gabriel Ornelas, Michael Jasso, Rene Rivera, and Adam Gonzales.
