Margaret was born on December 4, 1933, in Colorado City, Texas, to Jesse and Clara Golden Barr. She spent nearly her entire life in Colorado City, where she built a legacy of faith, hard work, service, and unconditional love for her family and community.
On February 24, 1951, Margaret married the love of her life, John D. Brown. Together they shared a beautiful life and created a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to one another. Their marriage was an example of commitment and faith until John's passing on April 17, 2020. Following his passing, Margaret continued living in Colorado City before moving to Midland six years ago, where she lovingly lived with her granddaughter, Krystal Kay Bradley, who became her devoted caregiver during the final years of her life.
Margaret was a lifelong member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Colorado City. Her faith guided the way she lived her life, and she started each day by reading the Bible and the Upper Room daily devotional. She generously shared her talents by cooking and baking for church events and serving meals and homemade desserts to the staff at the local prison. She believed that food was one of the greatest ways to show love, and no one who entered her home was ever left hungry. You were blessed if you ever got to enjoy her fried chicken, a talent lovingly taught to her by her mother-in-law when she was a new bride.
She was especially known for her incredible baking. Family and friends eagerly anticipated her famous banana pudding, pecan pie, and peanut butter Rice Krispies bars, especially during the holidays. Holiday gatherings around Margaret's table became treasured family traditions that will live on for generations.
Margaret's work ethic began early. At just 13 years old, she started her first job at Doss Drug Store in Colorado City. She later worked for Southwestern Bell before beginning a career with Safeway, where she faithfully worked for 15 years until retiring in 1983.
Retirement didn't slow her down. Margaret soon began babysitting for families throughout the Colorado City community. Over the years she became much more than a babysitter—she became a second grandmother, lovingly known as "Meme." The children she cared for adored her and continued calling her Meme long after they had grown, a testament to the love and lasting impact she had on so many lives.
Margaret never met a stranger. Caring for others came naturally to her. Whether she was preparing a meal, baking a dessert, offering a listening ear, or opening her home to someone in need, she always put others before herself. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with all her heart and treasured every moment spent together.
In her later years, she found simple joy in relaxing with her tablet, where she could often be found happily playing Solitaire.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Shirley Barta (Ron) and Charlotte Garcia.
She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Marcus Shawn Bradley (fiancée Crystal Putty), Krystal Kay Bradley (fiancé Robert Sanchez), Brittany Davila (fiancée Rusty Davila), Jennifer Barta (Tom Meaney), Ashlan Parkerson (husband, Bailey Parkerson).
She was also the proud great-grandmother of Dakota Bradley, Layla Arcides, Marcus Shawn Bradley Jr., Cayden Arcides, Raiden Davila, Alyssa Lujan, Liam Lujan, along with one cherished great-granddaughter, Elliot Parkerson
Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John D. Brown; her parents, Jesse and Clara Barr; her brothers, Herbert Barr, Robert Barr, Hubert Barr, Lloyd Barr, and Floyd Barr; and her sisters, Bernice Walker and Lillian Alexander.
Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life and embraced in the arms of her Lord. Her legacy will continue through every recipe shared, every family gathering, every act of kindness, and every life she touched.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
