She was born in Mitchell County on March 24, 1928 to H.L. and Florence Pierce Walker.
Nita lived a life of love and passion for her God and her family. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Colorado City and taught Sunday School in church for many years. Shortly after graduating from school Nita married the love of her life, Mr. Weldon T. Mahan on February 12, 1945. Together the two of them raised their 5 children, teaching them to love God and family and important lessons to get them through life. Nita grew up during the Great-Depression which gave her a good sense of how to stretch a dollar, and how to save for a rainy day, it also taught her how important it was to care for others and to help them when she was able to.
Nita was a member of the Ladies Art Guild in Colorado City. She enjoyed painting, sewing, cooking, gardening, and canning the food that she raised in her garden. Her life-joys often revolved around caring for her family, she would sew all the clothes they wore when they were young, and made excellent food whenever any of them were hungry and wanting any of their favorite meals.
Nita is survived by a son Tom Mahan of Colorado City, by her daughters Barbara Daniel and husband Bill of Arcada, California, Judy Pettebone of Denver Colorado, and Marilyn Sloan of Colorado City. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren with another one on the way, as well as by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband Weldon Mahan, by a son Michael Shane Mahan by a great-grandchild Christina Mahan, and by her siblings Bunk Walker, R. E. Walker, Dorothy Adams, and Bonnie Hale
A graveside service for Nita will be held on Monday, August 12th in the Colorado City Cemetery with Doctor Jerry Shields officiating. The family will be present for a visitiation on Sunday August 11th from 5-7 pm at the Kiker Seale Funeral Home.
