

He was born on April 27, 1926 in Terrell, Texas to Robert Nathaniel Gray Sr. and Minnie Alice Folsom Gray. He graduated from Terrell High in 1943, then went on to serve his country during WW2 in the Army of Occupation in Seoul Korea. He was a graduate of Texas A&M in 1948 receiving a DVM. Robert practiced veterinary medicine with Dr. J.D. Williams in Colorado City in the years of 1948 and 1949. On May 21, 1949 Doc married Otha McFarland, the daughter of Richard G. McFarland and Jewel Ford McFarland of Dunn, Texas. His relatives knew him as R.N. but he was known as Doc Gray to his clients and to friends. He and Otha made their home 12 miles south of Loraine until her death in 1997. Doc practiced veterinary medicine for many years from his pickup truck while also making sure to tend to his cattle and to his cotton farms in Mitchell and Scurry Counties.
Doc loved spending time arrowhead hunting and lecturing in the school systems about Native American life, culture, and unique artifacts, many of which can be seen at the Heart of West Texas Museum in Colorado City and enjoyed spending time with his constant companion Addie Smith.
Doc is survived by his constant companion Addie Smith, his niece Mary White Garcia and husband Louis, and his great nephews Gary White and wife Nicki, Randy White and wife Christi, and Brad White and wife April.
He was preceded in death by his wife Otha, a sister-in-law Johnnie A. White, and by a nephew Dickie White.
A graveside service for Doc will be held at the Dunn Cemetery in Dunn Texas on Tuesday, December 22 at 2pm with Rev Brett Hoyle officiating. A visitation will be held at the Kiker-Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City on Monday, December 21 from 5pm to 6:30 pm.
