Shirley was born on September 10, 1936 in Colorado City to Roy and Eva Smith Wells.
Shirley spent her early years in Loriane where she enjoyed many friendships and playing on the girls basketball team until she graduated from Loraine High School in 1955. Shortly after graduation on July 15, 1956 she married the love of her life C.L. Mendenhall in Loraine.
