

Susana was born on May 24, 1923, in Imperial, Texas. She was the youngest of eight children born to the late Alberto and Juana (Esparza) Velarde. At a young age Susana and her family moved to Colorado City, Texas where she grew up cultivating a strong work ethic working alongside her father and siblings in the fields. The family traveled to several places over the years in pursuit of different agricultural opportunities. She married Eriberto Alvarez, Sr. in 1943 and they began their life together in Colorado City. They relocated and lived in California for several years. They eventually returned to Texas, made a home, and established their family in Colorado City. She worked in agriculture and several other jobs. She eventually retired from the Root Memorial Hospital where she worked in Housekeeping.
Susana was a devoted Catholic and active in private prayer. She was a longtime member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed crafts and was an excellent seamstress. She loved to dance and loved having a good time with family and friends. She cherished welcoming family and friends into her home, where there was always a warm smile, a kind heart, and something sweet waiting to be shared. She moved to Marion, TX to live near her daughter and son-in-law and resided at the Brooks at Cibolo where she enjoyed an active life and created special relationships with many of the staff.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Eriberto “Eddie” Alvarez, Jr., Armondo Alvarez, and Alfredo “Freddie” Alvarez.
She is survived by her daughter, Guadalupe “Nora” Garner and her husband, Tom of Marion, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Mary Alvarez of Colorado City; grandchildren, Tony Mendoza, Debra Rios(Paul), Christopher Alvarez, Amanda Costabile (Ryan), Angela DeArmond(Chris) and Nicole Milner(Mason); numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Mitchell County Cemetery in the Alvarez family plot under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
