

He was born in Whelen Springs, Arkansas on April 9, 1932 to parents Cleeta Vester Coon and Beaulah Posey Coon.
V.O. was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a kindhearted man who made friends easily; never meeting a stranger. He often put the needs of others before his own. He was great at telling stories and had a real sense of humor. The family was blessed with many fond memories to cherish, lessons learned and great holidays.
After high school V.O. attended college where he played the tuba in the marching band. He also met and married the love of his life June Blake. The couple moved to Jal, New Mexico where he began a career of more than 30 years for El Paso Natural Gas Company working in Jal number 1 plant later being transferred to the Wilshire Plant in Crane, Texas, then transferring to Chaco Plant in Farmington N.M. After retiring they eventually moved to Colorado City. He loved his work and excelled at keeping the plant running and supervising. In 1949, he enlisted in the Army National Guard, serving until 1957. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant in the infantry and served as a tank commander.
V.O. always loved to dance, two-stepping his way around West Texas with his friends. Some of his fondest memories were of riding horses while working as a ranch hand in New Mexico, finding arrow heads for his collection and metal detecting. He also enjoyed repairing vehicles, his favorite being his El Camino that once belonged to his father. Other vehicles he rebuilt into dune buggies for family and friends to enjoy. It was a rite of passage for his children and grandchildren to be taught to drive by “Pa” in these vehicles. He loved to RV and camp. He enjoyed hunting skeet shooting and being outdoors’ whether he was in his shop, riding his tractor and mowers, or working on his endless wood working projects.
V.O. is survived by his daughters Sharlyn Finch of Colorado City and Rita Hurst and her husband Charles of Midland, by grandchildren Drew Finch and wife Mandy of San Saba, C.J. Hurst and wife Hailey of Ranger, and Sara Holmes and husband Braden of Midland as well as by great-grandchildren Caleb, Melissa, June, and Ryan, and by cousins Tommy Posey, his wife Brenda Posey and their children Brett Posey and Tonya Posey Portmann and their family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years June Kuhn, and by a great grandson Andrew J. Hurst, and his son-in-law Clayton Finch.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 14th from 10-12pm in the Kiker Seale Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside inurnment to follow in the Colorado City Cemetery with Military Honors.
