Nona J. King of Manitou Springs Colorado left this life to be with the Lord on April 27th, 2019 surrounded by her loving and devoted family. Nona was born in Huron, South Dakota on August 13, 1930 and was the second of four daughters born to the late Walter and Leona Schipporeit. The family moved to Manitou Springs in 1943 to follow her father’s job as a Lineman.
Nona graduated from Manitou Springs High School in 1948 and worked alongside her mother and 3 sisters in the popular gathering place, Kenny’s Café, located in the Manitou Arcade area which was owned by her parents. It was here that she met the love of her life, Jay, who was a Fort Carson soldier and frequent customer. Jay and Nona married in October of 1953 and moved to Indiana after his honorable discharge from the Army. They lived in Indiana for five years before moving back to Manitou in 1958 so that Nona could help her mother at Kenny’s due to her father’s declining health. They had three sons, Dave, Dan and Daryl, who live in Colorado and Wyoming.
Through her years of candy making at Kenny’s Café, Nona was notorious for her english toffee and peanut brittle that she made each Christmas to give as gifts. Nona was best known for her 31 years as secretary for the Manitou Springs School District working 10 years at the Middle School and 21 years at the High School. Nona had an extraordinary gift for remembering names, faces and family connections, (referred to as a genealogical database), but she was most treasured for the way she made everyone she met feel special. The love she showed to students, parents and teachers was unique and genuine, and she soon became known as “Mom” to countless individuals over the years. Her caring words and listening ear will be especially remembered.
Nona was a constant presence and source of loving encouragement to her 3 sons and she extended that same dedication and blessing to their families, most especially her grandchildren who were the light of her life. The unconditional love, kindness and devotion that flowed so naturally from her will be a void that can never be replaced. She will be profoundly and deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.
Nona was preceded in death by her parents Walt and Leona, sisters Berniece and Louise, and granddaughter Charlotte. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband Jay of 65 years, sister Doris Bales of Colorado Springs, devoted sons Dave (Sue) King of Manitou Springs, Dan (Deby) King of Colorado Springs, and Daryl (Penny) King of Worland WY, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Services will be held on May 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Worship Center, 501 Castle Road, Colo Springs CO. To leave an online condolence to the family, please visit the website https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/colorado-springs-co/nona-king-8266312
