Columbia, South Carolina - Adelyn Grant Price, 91, of Columbia, South Carolina, died on November 19, 2023. She was born in Ridge Spring, SC, on May 8, 1932, the daughter of Edmund Griffin Grant and Anna Wilkinson Brunson, and delivered by her maternal grandfather, Dr. P.A. Brunson. Adelyn attended Columbia College, majoring in music and graduating in 1953. She regularly attended alumni events throughout her life and referred to her Columbia College friends as sisters.
In 1953, Adelyn married Thomas Edison Price of Lexington, SC, beginning a 48 year marriage, only ending when Tom passed in 2001. Together they built a marriage and a home in Columbia, SC, welcoming five children- Dr. Anna Brunson Price, Adeline Keith Price, Thomas Edison Price, Jr., Florence Perry Price and Alice Abbott Price.
Adelyn was a music lover. She shared her love of music, teaching piano to children for many years. Whether it was playing classical music for a newborn grandchild, or attending a grandchild’s musical or choral performance, she loved experiencing the beauty of music. She has passed this music appreciation on to her children and grandchildren.
Adelyn was a pioneering woman entrepreneur. After teaching piano, she opened The Nearly New Thrift & Antique Shop, which she operated for 28 years. She and Tom worked side by side; she at the antique shop, and he at his insurance agency. Adelyn and Tom were partners in everything they did and set the example of what it means to be disciplined, frugal, wise, loving and hard-working.
Adelyn was raised in the Episcopal Church. She attended St. John’s Episcopal Church-Shandon and St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church. Later in life, she found her church family at Bethel United Methodist Church where she enjoyed making new friends and worshiping with her son, Tom’s family. Most recently, Adelyn lived at Still Hopes Retirement Community where she reconnected with old friends and continued to make many new friends.
Adelyn was a remarkable woman, and in many ways, a woman ahead of her time. She was independent and skeptical, always thinking for herself at a time when many women did not. Her family considers Adelyn and Tom’s modeling of family values and character as foundations for their own families and lives. Adelyn and Tom considered their family their greatest achievement.
Adelyn is survived by her children, Dr. Anna Price of Bowman (David Gurganus deceased), Addie Mathes (Richard Knittel) of Atlanta, GA, Tom Price (Paulette) of Columbia, Florrie Price of Columbia, Alice Adams (Jason) of Columbia; grandchildren, David Thieker, Benjamin Mathes, Adam Mathes, Allison Price, Ashlee Krupa, Jenny Curran, Bryan Willoch, Price Willoch, Sarah Adams, Rebekah Adams, Anna Katherine Adams; great-grandchildren, Surya Thieker, Emmylou Adeline Mathes, Allen Mathes, Trapier Mathes, Saralynn Mathes, James Mathes, Hannah Curran, and Atticus Willoch; and nieces, many cousins and extended family. Adelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother John A. Grant, her son-in-law David Gurganus, and her grandson Scott Willoch.
A Memorial Service for Adelyn will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia, SC 29206.
