

COLUMBIA - Agnes Long Whiteside “Aggie”, 90, passed away on August 7, 2014 at the Wildewood Downs retirement community. Born in Durham, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Janie and Ralph Long. After graduating from Durham High School, Aggie attended Duke University from where she received an A.B Degree in Education. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Education Fraternity, and Women’s Student Government Association. Aggie then worked in the Duke University Alumni Office before teaching school in Arlington, Virginia. It was in Washington, DC where she met her husband, the late Robert Whiteside. They moved to Columbia in 1955 and were married for over 60 years. Aggie and Bob joined Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in 1956. Aggie was very active in the church as a Sunday school teacher, Chairman of the Olive Moffatt Circle several times, and President of the United Methodist Women. Aggie loved to read, cook, go to concerts, and play bridge as often as she could. She was also known for her ardent love of Duke, especially Duke Basketball and Coach K. Her biggest joy was helping raise her three sons. Aggie is survived by son, Stephen L. Whiteside (Becky) of Raleigh, NC, and grandsons, Chris Whiteside (Caitlin) and Jeff Whiteside (Melia); son, Bruce E. Whiteside (Tricia) of Clemson, SC, grandchildren, Lindsay Grieshop (Jeremy) and Cam Whiteside, and great grandchildren, Livy and Maddox Grieshop; and son, Stuart D. Whiteside (Francie) of Mount Pleasant, SC and grandchildren, Cody Whiteside (Lindsay), Sally Dressler (Blake), and Weezie Whiteside. A memorial service for Aggie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 23, 2014 at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. Visitation will be in the church parlor immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Trenholm Road United Methodist Church Foundation, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204. The family wishes to thank all of her doctors and caregivers for their support and excellent care including Drs.
