

COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian burial for Angelo Anthony “Tony” Amodio, 91, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following until 7:00 p.m. Mr. Amodio died Monday, December 12, 2016. Born in Middletown, N.Y., Tony was the eldest son of Italian immigrants, Theodore and Mary Oliva Amodio. At the onset of WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees, traveling to San Diego, Calif. for basic training and eventually being deployed to the Pacific. He was a member of the 105 Construction Battalion where he saw action in New Guinea and helped liberate the Philippines. At the end of WWII, he attended broadcast school in Jacksonville, Fla., graduating and moving to Camden, S.C. He was employed there for many years with radio station WACA as an engineer and local radio personality. In 1965, Tony relocated to Columbia where he was employed with Dixie Radio for ten years and eventually retired from the Ben Arnold Company in 1988. Tony volunteered at Providence Hospital for 32 years where he accumulated 22,135 hours and received a Volunteer of the Year Award in 1992. He was known and loved by many at the hospital and was affectionately referred to as “Mr. Sunshine.” Tony never left home without his smile. He will be remembered for his good nature and his love of people. God and family were foremost in his life. He enjoyed fishing, working crossword puzzles, writing poetry, spinning a yarn, telling jokes and had a gusto for living each day to the fullest. Tony is survived by his wife of 20 years, Margaret; his children, Edward Amodio, Robert Amodio (Betty), Suzanne Amodio, Joan Kishline (Robert), Stephen Amodio (Marina), Sybille Eisenhower, David Amodio; stepsons, David Parrish (Aleshia), Charles Parrish (Ashley); 22 grandchildren; and dozens of great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Maria Amodio; daughter, Patricia Sharpe; granddaughter, Kristen Amodio; his parents; his brother, Dominic “Babe” Amodio; and his sister, Fannie Amodio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
