Ann Demarice Chesnut Fetner, former resident of Chapin, SC, died Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at the age of 95. Born in Pulaski, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Clinton R. Chesnut and Beatrice Abney Chesnut.
After graduating from Morton High School in Mississippi, Ann moved to Columbia, SC to reside with relatives locally. During the last year of WW2, the then-Miss Chesnut was a popular junior hostess at the Columbia USO due to her enthusiastic dance skills. She was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church’s Luther League, where she eventually met her future husband, Bryan C Fetner, Jr., USN, who had recently returned from active duty in the Pacific theater.
Married in 1947, Ann and Bryan lived in the Rosewood area of Columbia where she was involved in many community activities including the Rosewood Elementary School PTA, the SCE&G Ladies’ Auxiliary, and the Capitol Swingers Square Dance group. In 1984, they moved to a home on Lake Murray in Chapin, where they were active members of Mt Horeb Lutheran Church. After Bryan’s death in 1985, Ann continued to live in Chapin, surrounded by many friends. She enjoyed crafts and needlework and was a member of the Chapin Community Craft Club for many years and enjoyed sharing her talents with others. She was also a member of the Miriam Circle at Mt Horeb and delivered Meals On Wheels for several years.
Her greatest joy was gardening. Ann was happiest when working within her yard, tending to her flowers and shrubs year-round. This continued well into her 90s, when health issues necessitated a move to Wellmore of Lexington in 2019.
Surviving are her children, Jeffrey B Fetner (Patricia) of Irmo, SC and daughter Wendy Dover Balough (Scott) of Lexington, SC; grandsons, Bryan Fetner (Natahli), Nathanial Fetner (Welina), John Dover, Paul Dover, Jeff Balough; granddaughter Gracie Balough; great-grandchildren, William, Sharon, and Ora Ann Fetner; and brother, Ray Chesnut of Louin, MS. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ann was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Chesnut and Lloyd Chesnut.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Wellmore of Lexington’s Assisted Living and Memory Care units for the loving care they shared with Ann during her residence there, and to Agape Care for their assistance.
