COLUMBIA - Anne Barton McGregor, child of God, devoted wife and loving mother, passed away on February 10, 2021.

Anne was born in Columbia, SC in 1930 to Jesse D. Barton and Ella D. Barton. She graduated from Dreher High School and Furman University. She received a Master in Political Science from Emory University. She taught at Belmont College before returning home to Columbia to marry her husband of 44 years, George Hagood McGregor.

Anne raised four children and continued to teach in Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, while guiding tours at the SC Governor’s Mansion, and leading English conversation classes for international families. Later in life she developed skills as a storyteller and volunteered in schools telling stories to children. Anne was curious and a life-long learner trying new crafts and recipes, sewing fashions for her daughters, finding stories to tell, and traveling to learn.

Anne loved God and her family dearly, especially her grandchildren. She loved her friends from church, friends from high school and college, and friends from the Rotary Book Club. She was accepting of all people she met and was deeply interested in their stories.

Anne is predeceased by her parents, husband and several cousins. Anne is survived by her children: Peter McGregor, Catherine Swaim (Thomas), Sarah McGregor, Joanne Morton (Brian) and grandchildren: Keith McGregor, Kelly McGregor, Graham Swaim, Elizabeth Swaim, Jesse Morton, Ella Morton and Sadie Morton. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law, Molly Jones and Audrey McGregor, her cousin Clarence Barton (Mary) and her best friend Cornelia Williams (Leland).

The family wishes to thank the many caregivers at The Woodlands at Furman who helped Anne thrive when she could and made her comfortable when she could not.

Memorials may be made to the children’s ministry of St. Andrews Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, to the Zeta Sophia Scholarship Fund of Furman University, or to a church or charity of your choice.
