Arthur Heitlinger of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on August 2, 2023. He was born on June 3, 1936, in Hunnington, New York to Frank and Fannie Heitlinger. After high school graduation, Arthur joined the Marine Corps in 1953. In September 1956, he left the marines to follow his father’s footsteps in the apparel business. He moved to Columbia in 1970 to continue his profession while working for Salley Manufacturing out of Salley SC. In 1986, he retired to start a used car business. He had multiple used car lots over the years until retiring in 2016.
Artie made friends wherever he went with his joyful personality. He loved being a grandfather and doted on his 3 grandchildren. He loved “Papa Artie Days” that he spent with them that usually included Chinese food at Red Bowl or a buffet. He also loved animals and always had a rescue house cat as a faithful companion.
Artie will be remembered for his sense of humor and his collection of funny T-shirts. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his 3 sisters: Evelyn Kaplan, Roberta Dichowski and Davine Dantzler. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Stacy Wise (Andy); his grandchildren, Halley Wise, Emily Wise and Drew Wise; and his faithful feline friend, Tigger. He is also survived by his daughter, Caryn Helman and family.
We would like to acknowledge all of his friends from Merrill Gardens that played an important role in his happiness and well being over his final years. We would also like to thank doctors, nurses and staff at Lexington Medical Center for their special treatment of Artie over the past few years and at the end of his life.
There will be a private family burial with military honors at Fort Jackson Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held at Merrill Gardens on Monday, August 7th at 2:00 p.m.
