Barbara Harvey Motley

Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Andrew F. Harvey and Marguerite Pedersen Harvey. Barbara was a devoted member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she found joy and fellowship in the Ruth Sunday School class. A talented seamstress, she poured love into every stitch—crafting beautiful baby quilts, delicate crochet pieces, and intricate cross-stitch designs. She found peace in life’s simple pleasures, whether working on a puzzle, relaxing on her side porch, or watching the birds flutter by—especially her beloved hummingbirds. Her warmth, creativity, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her sons, John M. Motley, Jr. (Martha), and Robert A. Motley (Linda); grandchildren, Shannon Motley, Stephanie Motley, Kristina Bennett (Jon), Rob Motley, and Kim McLemore (Dwayne); great-grandchildren, Bryson, Colton, and Gracyn McLemore, Rylee and Maggie Bennett, and Piper and Rhea Motley; stepchildren, Linda Sosbee, Danny Sosbee, and Donna Sosbee; brother, Michael “Gene” Harvey; and sister, Patricia Barefoot; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, John McLeod Motley, Sr. and her husband of 11 years, Herbert “Danny” Sosbee, Sr.; brothers, Andrew Harvey, and George Harvey; and sisters, Elaine Faucher and Elizabeth Miller.

A visitation to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held Sunday, March 9, 2025 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Beulah Baptist Church, located at 9487 Garners Ferry Rd., Hopkins, SC. Following the visitation, she will be laid to rest in a private service at the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
