Bernard Irving Berkowitz

Columbia, South Carolina: Bernard I. Berkowitz passed on November 1, 2021 at MUSC Northeast at the age of 98. Bernie was born May 8, 1923 in Bridgeport, Connecticut; the son of Harry Berkowitz and Ella Greenbaum Berkowitz. He served his country overseas during World War II and after his service he went to the University of Connecticut ( Go Huskies)on the GI Bill, earning a degree in Accounting. After graduation he worked as a butcher for a short period of time, before becoming an auditor for the NSA. He also ran a successful accounting business providing services to families and small businesses.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara R. Berkowitz, his two daughters, Marsha Sturgis of Edgewater, Maryland and Sue Berkowitz (Harrison Palmer) of Columbia and his five grandchildren Elliott, Leah and Rachael Sturgis, John Paul and Max Palmer. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Sydney Berkowitz, Florence Sussman, Emma Solomon, many nieces, and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 4, 2021 in Beth Shalom Arcadia Lakes Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com
