God’s Grace

Bette Woodall Hair, 92, peacefully passed into Heaven Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Merrill Gardens Carolina Park in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Born October 15, 1933, in Walhalla, SC, her family moved to Westminster when she was eight years old. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Woodall and Lula Denny Woodall. She attended Westminster High School, Anderson College, and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Nursing. Mrs. Hair married her late husband, William Earl Hair, on her birthday, October 15, 1954, and they were married nearly 66 years. Her life was spent as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her family who was the joy of her life.

Mrs. Hair served her two daughters as Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader and homeroom mother. She often made their costumes for her daughters and her grandchildren’s various parties and activities. Mrs. Hair could often be found “snapping pictures” at family events and often saying “William, where’s the camera?!” She had a very quick wit and enjoyed making others laugh. Her giggles and beautiful smile will be long remembered.

Mrs. Hair was the first member of the Columbia Garden Club and the second member of the Garden Dale Garden Club. She was an active member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where she enjoyed attending Sunday School with William and their friends. Mrs. Hair loved God’s creation, especially sunsets, clouds, and the color of the autumn leaves in the mountains.

Mrs. Hair was extremely proud of her grandchildren and their spouses, and she was “Great Gran” to her five great-grandchildren, especially delighting in their educational, recreational, and professional successes, though her greatest pride was their dedication to living their lives with and for Jesus their Lord and Savior.

Surviving are her two daughters, Sherri Hair Gaulin of Clemson, SC, and Kim Hair James (Roy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four grandchildren, Lauren Rechel Gaulin of Greenville, SC, Jonathan Roy James (Savannah) of Fairfax, VA, Katherine Gaulin Carter of Columbia, SC, and William Devant James (Maridee) of Springfield, PA; five great-grandchildren, Edward Allan and Rhett Camden Carter, Caroline Francis and Bennett Milling James, and Elizabeth “Ellie” Rabb James; siblings, Denny Woodall Neilson and Gary Michael Woodall, both of Darlington, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, Allan Wayne Gaulin; her siblings, S. Y. Woodall, and Katherine Woodall Cartee.

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 am prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jonathan Roy James and William Devant James

We were blessed to have had devoted and loving care givers for our Mother the last four months of her life. They were with her 24 hours a day, seven days a week and they could make her smile and laugh even when she was going through difficult times. We could never thank them enough. You blessed our lives with endless love, care and fun. Memories of backyard Olympics, New Year’s Eve fireworks, Egg hunts, Money Trees and way too many Ice Cream Sandwiches will stay with us forever! You poured into our lives with love and your infections laughter. Your smile brightened every room. We are forever grateful for your life, grounded in faith and family. We know Granddaddy is waiting for his “number 1” with open arms. We love you and we miss you!
