I met Carla in the 70’s when she was on holiday in South Florida.  She introduced me to the wisdom of The Little Prince and became a lifelong friend.  I always will remember her unique wit, intelligence and compassion, plus her beauty and devotion to her family.

Dear Daniel,

I’m finding it difficult to express just what your mom meant to me. In addition to being glamorous, sophisticated, and with a wicked sense of humor, she was kind to the core. I happen to know this because of the way she modeled compassion for you. 

I am close with a former classmate of yours who had many challenges growing up and has now been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He once told me that you were the only person who was kind to him throughout his schooling. At the time I remember thinking, “This is Carla’s doing. Shine Carla shine!”

Her influence on me was eclectic and hard to calculate. She was a combination of sister, mentor, and friend. One of my favorite ways to bond was to spend an afternoon with her. With the wisdom of age and a lightness of spirit, she stimulated a deep reservoir of Columbia impressions to which we returned again and again. Lacking in guile and with a cerebral wit, she entertained me as she regaled with stories of former lives and loves. My ears always perked up to hear her earthy brand of gossip, and I stood at attention at her no-nonsense advice.

She was never so happy, Daniel, as when showing me pictures of your growing family. Know that you have earned the peaceful sleep of having loved well and being loved in return.

Give Sarah and the kids a hug from me.

So sorry for your loss. 

Daniel asked me to pick up his shotgun on the way back to Duke from Florida. We showed up having never met Daniel’s mom before and she treated us like she knew us forever and made sure we were fed before heading north.

I’ll never forget her kindness and hospitality.

Carla was both beautiful  and gracious.
To her family and friends.  I am so sorry for your loss .  May your memories of her always  bring  a smile to your face and  a warmness to your heart.
