Born in Columbia, S.C., May 15, 1957, to Dr. Robert Gibbes and Carolyn Gibbes. She graduated from Dreher High School and earned a BSN in Nursing from the University of South Carolina. She had a career for over 46 years as a Registered Nurse, beginning at Baptist Hospital, Midlands Center, Sisters of Charity Providence Hospital, Surgical Associates of South Carolina, and finishing her career at MUSC Providence in Columbia.
She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Columbia, served on the board for Cities in School, where she was awarded the Francis S. McMeekin award.
As any mother would, she became heavily involved in her boys' interests, David Marshall White Jr. and Alston Robert Gibbes White, serving as President of the Sandlapper Soccer Association and as a First Aid Instructor for Boy Scout Troop 8.
Carolyn was active with Shandon Presbyterian Church, where she held positions as an Elder, Sunday school teacher, Deacon, senior high advisor, chairman of the 75th Shandon Presbyterian Anniversary, Nursery Care Coordinator, and member of the Pastor Nominating Committee, and participated in multiple mission trips locally and internationally.
Carolyn enjoyed spending countless hours at the beach, combing the surf for shells and other treasures washed ashore, reading a good “trashy beach” book, going antiquing to add to her ever-growing collection of family heirlooms, and spending time with friends and family.
Carolyn was a selfless individual (some would call stubborn) who very rarely asked for help but was always first to offer her assistance to anyone who asked. She was a devoted nurse who was a mentor and mother-like figure to many of her colleagues in the various positions she held throughout her professional career.
Surviving are her sons, and siblings, Susan Brookshire (Bennie), Hunter Gibbes (Linda), and Rhoda Yarborough (Joe), in addition to numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Carolyn will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1 at Shandon Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church memorial gardens to be held at a later date. The Rev. Jenny McDevitt will guide the service. The family will welcome friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Thursday, April 30, at the White Family home. Parking is limited; please carpool if possible.
In place of flowers, the family wishes any memorials be made to: Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow St, Columbia, SC 29205, or to the SPCA.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com
