COLUMBIA Carrie May Weekley Walker, 93, left this life to rest in eternity on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 28, 2021. I would be derelict in my daughterly duties, if I did not mention at this point, that as a matter of routine, Carrie Walker checked the obituaries daily in the morning paper to “see if she was listed”. When I join her on the other side in eternity I will let her know that I saw her name and that she is in the right place.
Carrie was born in the Low Country of South Carolina, Ulmers, to be exact as the Great Depression was starting, to John Francis Weekley and Mary Wright Weekley. The death of her father and a few short years later her mother left Carrie May and her siblings orphans. Family members provided homes and support, but those were hard times and the brothers and sisters were eventually sent down different paths. Carrie and some of her siblings were given placement at John de la Howe School in McCormick, S.C. John de la Howe school was a residential school with a focus on agriculture and self-sufficiency. Carrie May seemed to enjoy her time at de la Howe as she fondly shared many stories of her time there.
Upon graduation from de la Howe, she went to Winthrop College for a year and then moved to Columbia where she attended business school. She was a bookkeeper by trade for many years. By far, however, her greatest “job” was grandmother to her three grandchildren.
As well as her parents, Carrie May was predeceased by her husband, W.K. Walker, Sr. and her son, Willis K. Walker, Jr. She was the last living of her siblings. She has also been reunited in eternity with her brothers and sisters, Eugene, Marion, Rebecca, Johnson and Katherine, as well as two babies that died at birth. Carrie is survived by daughters Susan Walker of Columbia, S.C. and Beverly “B.B.” Turbyfill (Charles) of Evans, Ga. She is also survived by her greatest joys in life, grandchildren, Amelia “Amy” Turbyfill of Evans, Ga., Mary Lane Turbyfill and R. Walker Turbyfill, both of Atlanta, Ga. She leaves behind to cherish all kinds of memories, sisters-in-law, Helen Daughtry, Florence Weekley, Olga Weekley, and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as many great friends she made throughout her life.
Susan and Beverly would like to thank Linda Derrick for her care, companionship and kindness shown to Mom this last year of her life. National Health Care Parklane was also excellent in their care, attention and compassion shown to our mother during the last month of her life.
We will gather to celebrate Carrie May’s 93 years of life on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street. Visitation and sharing of memories will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
If anyone would like to donate in Carrie May’s memory, she would have appreciated them to be made to the Television Ministry of First Baptist Church, Columbia as she had worshipped faithfully through that ministry for many years.
