COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Carroll Boland Eargle, Jr., 87, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Incarnation Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel and at other times at the home of Mary Rivers. Mr. Eargle passed from this life into eternal life in Jesus our Lord Monday, June 8, 2015. Born in Chappells, SC, he was a son of the late Carroll Boland Eargle, Sr. and Margaret Myrtle Summer Eargle. He was a graduate of Dreher High School. He worked several part time jobs during his junior and senior years of school. After graduation he was employed at John King Leather Company, where he was taught the business. He sold and delivered leather goods to shoe shops throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, and the Columbia area. Upon Mr. Kings’ retirement, Mr. Eargle purchased the business. He was very successful in running the business until he had a stroke in April 2013 that left him paralyzed on the left side. He continued to supervise his son in the business from his sick bed. He never wanted to retire or let go of the business regardless of his health. That was his life and he enjoyed every day being in his leather chair and talking with his friends and customers. Mr. Eargle was an avid football fan of USC and watched as many games as he was able to receive on television. When they were not televised he made sure that someone turned the radio to the station that broadcast the game. He enjoyed sharing the game with his friends and employees at the nursing facility. Television was an important pastime while he was confined to his bed. He and his family enjoyed spending time at his lake home every weekend. Mr. Eargle was baptized in Incarnation Lutheran Church and maintained his membership there until his death. He is survived by his wife, of 67 years, Helen Johnson Eargle; son, Carroll Boland Eargle III, of Columbia. Also surviving are his brother, James Leonard Eargle of Batesburg, and his godchild, Frances Margaret Eargle of Washington and Columbia, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Eargle was predeceased by his son, John Baker Eargle; brothers, Frank William Eargle, Ollie Neal Eargle, and Paul Summer Eargle. The family would like to thank Heartland of Columbia Rehabilitation for working with Carroll over two years, and a special thanks to Agape Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Incarnation Lutheran Church, 3005 Devine Street, Columbia, S.C. 29205, or to a charity of one’s choice.
