Age 93 - Columbia, South Carolina
A devoted follower of Christ and a faithful servant of the Lord, Catherine “Cathy” Mayers Morris, age 93, passed away peacefully in her home on December 31, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina. Her life was a testament to unwavering faith, tireless service, and deep love for her family and community.
Born on August 7, 1932, in Mullins, South Carolina, Cathy was the daughter of Enoch Cleveland Mayers Sr. and Mary Mollie Mayers. She grew up in a large and loving family alongside her siblings: Enoch Cleveland Mayers Jr., Inez Gass, Gladys Elizabeth Long, Annie Mae Bray, Edith Rogers, Betty Levena Rogers, and Elma Virginia Mayers, all of whom preceded her in death.
Cathy pursued higher education at Columbia College’s School of Business. Her professional journey led her to the South Carolina Baptist Convention, where she served faithfully for many years before retiring. In her role as Executive Assistant to the Executive Director and through various other responsibilities, she was widely recognized for her dedication, professionalism, and meaningful impact on those around her.
In 1955, Cathy and her husband Lee joined Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Columbia—a spiritual home that would become central to her life for the next seven decades. Her commitment to ministry was evident in every aspect of her church involvement. She served as Sunday School Superintendent for 15 years before retiring from that role but remained deeply engaged in numerous church committees, including Pulpit, Personnel, Stewardship, Building, Nominating, and the Lord’s Supper Committee. A devoted member of the Women’s Missions Group and a faithful worker with the Community Bible Club, Cathy lived out her faith through action.
One of Cathy’s most enduring legacies is the Church Food Pantry she founded in 1996. Later, it was renamed the "Lee Morris Memorial Food Pantry" in honor of her beloved late husband, Lewis Lee Morris. Cathy remained actively involved in its operation for many years, working with the Church Family, Cooperative Ministry and the Red Cross, ensuring that those in need were met with support, compassion, and dignity.
Beyond church walls, Cathy extended her nurturing spirit into local schools through Project Love. There, she mentored elementary students and helped them create small birdbaths—simple yet lasting symbols of love and care.
She was a proud mother to two daughters: Janet M. Nobles (deceased), husband, Arch W. Nobles III; and Deborah M. Thompson. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Nicole C. Gantt-Whitlock and husband Woody Whitlock; William A. Nobles IV; Robert L. Nobles and wife Meghan; Andrew B. Nobles; and Timothy L. Wix Jr., as well as great-grandchildren Tyler Gantt; Ellie and Asher Nobles; Morgan, Lucas, and Jackson Nobles.
Family gatherings were among Cathy’s greatest joys—occasions filled with laughter, stories, food, and love. She cherished time spent with her husband to include fishing or relaxing at the beach, two favorite pastimes that brought peace to her soul. Her green thumb was legendary among those who knew her; Cathy’s famous rose garden and vibrant hydrangeas reflected her beauty and care.
A woman of deep conviction yet gentle spirit, Cathy embodied Christian values through forgiveness, generosity, humility, and grace. She inspired all who knew her—not just through words but by living a life of purpose.
May Catherine “Cathy” Morris’ memory bring comfort to all who knew her—and may her legacy continue.
