

A private graveside service will be conducted for the family at Bush River Memorial Gardens by Pastor Dennis Banks of Shandon Baptist Church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Born June 27, 1920, in Cleveland County, N.C.; she was the last surviving child of the late Joseph Elliott and Novella Wilson Covington. She was married to her high school sweetheart, the late James "Ed" Spurling for 63 years.
She had been a member of Shandon Baptist Church since 1947, active in Sunday School, W.M.U., the prayer and homebound ministries, served on the flower committee, and Legacy Builders. She was retired from the S.C. State Library.
Catherine loved life and sharing her home with family and friends. She enjoyed various arts and crafts of which many "Spurling Specials" were created.
Our beloved Mother and "Gandy" is survived by daughters, Brenda Spurling Brown of Cayce, S.C. and Betsy Spurling Brooks (Rob) of Chapin, S.C.; grandchildren, Blake Brown of Cayce, S.C., Michele Brown Grahn (Kelly) of Lexington, S.C., Scott Taylor (Jolie) of Pawley's Island, S.C., Mimi Taylor Smith (Billy) of Chapin, S.C.; great grandchildren, Katelin Hickman (Dustin) of Lexington, S.C., Alex George of Durham, N.C., Austin Taylor of Pawley's Island, S.C.; great-great grandchild, Erin Hickman of Lexington, S.C.; caring nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents;her brothers, Vernon, Theron and Gaylen Covington; her sister, Marie Mauney; and her son-in-law, Leland "Taz" Brown.
Catherine was committed to her family and loved by many. She leaves us with many cherished memories. We thank God for the life, love, and example of our Mother and "Gandy"!
