COLUMBIA - Charles Fredrick Shipley, III, M.D., 72, died December 17, 2018. He was born on July 30, 1946 in Sumter, South Carolina, and raised in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Charles Frederick Shipley, Jr. and Frances J. Shipley.
Dr. Shipley was a graduate of Berkeley High School in Moncks Corner, and attended Clemson University on a football scholarship. He was also a graduate of Embry Riddle Flight School in Miami, Florida, College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. After completing his residency at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, he was a practicing physician at Trident Hospital in Charleston from 1983 - 1985; an attending physician with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Department of Obstectrics and Gynecology, Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia from 1985 - 2007, and a practicing OB/GYN at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, South Carolina from 2007 through the time of his death.
Dr. Shipley was a certified OB/GYN physician with the American College of Obstectrics and Gynecology, a published physician in the area of OB/GYN academic medicine, a lifelong pilot, and was involved in numerous medical and aviation organizations.
Dr. Shipley is survived by his wife, Kaye Hempley Shipley; step-daughter, Sydney Bumgarner of Columbia; his son, C. Frederick Shipley, IV (Vanessa) of Lexington, SC; his brothers, Michael J. Shipley (Renee) of Satsuma, AL and Richard M. Shipley (Dee) of Tavares, FL; his nieces, Jennifer Shipley Kyzer (Blake) of Satsuma and Erin Shipley Rutledge (Conor) of Gulf Shores, AL; and many other loving relatives, friends and patients.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
