COLUMBIA - Born on June 18, 1944 to Caroline Arthur Mauldin and Thomas Franklin Mauldin, Deborah Reed Hollingsworth Mauldin went to join her loving parents on April 8, 2015. Reed was educated in Richland County Public Schools, Winthrop College, and the University of South Carolina. For the past 22 years she was a beloved member of the real estate profession in Columbia, as executive assistant to her employer, Whit Moore. Reed was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of South Carolina, the Junior Leagues of Columbia and Atlanta, and the French Huguenot Society. Reed will be remembered for her extraordinary warmth and laughter. She made friends readily, and her caring, outgoing nature will be missed by all. As a young girl she delighted in riding horses at Webb Riding Academy and was everyone’s favorite shag partner. She taught a generation of Columbia’s children how to dance and practice manners at Ms. Sloan’s Dancing School. Aside from her community in Columbia, her great joy was sitting on the beach at Pawley’s Island and spending time with her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Mollie. Reed is survived by her sister Carol Mauldin Avinger (Norman), of Anderson, SC, and her brother Thomas Franklin Mauldin, Jr. (Melanie) of Columbia, SC. Also, seven nieces and nephews: Mauldin Avinger (Caroline) of Greenville, SC; Frank Avinger (Carmen) of Mt Pleasant, SC; Logan Mauldin of Scottsdale, AZ; Thomas Mauldin of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Caroline Mauldin of Cambridge, MA; and four great-nieces and three great-nephews. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Martha Parker Hester and the caregivers of Amedysis Hospice and Retire Ease Senior Services. A private family interment will take place at 10:30 at the Church of the Holy Cross, Stateburg, followed by a memorial service at St. John’s Episcopal, 2827 Wheat St., Columbia, SC at 12:30, Saturday, April 11. A reception will immediately follow in St. John’s Parrish Hall. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Amedysis Hospice of Columbia, (220 Stoneridge Dr #105, Columbia, SC 29210), or to the charity of your choice.
