Don Rosick died peacefully at his home in Columbia on June 23. Born in Macon, Georgia, he grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. In high school, he was an All-State basketball player. He attended Texas Christian University on a full basketball scholarship. After graduation, he served in the Peace Corps in Venezuela from 1963-65, an experience which cemented his lifelong interest in other cultures.
Don taught at the Mather School in Beaufort and at Allen University before joining the South Carolina Department of Social Services, where he was Assistant Director for Staff Development and Training. One of his proudest initiatives was to have co-founded the HABLA Program to facilitate communication between DSS workers and Spanish-speaking clients with limited English proficiency.
After he retired, Don enthusiastically embarked on new ventures. He pursued his boyhood passion for archaeology by enrolling in courses at the University of South Carolina and participating in archaeological digs. With his wife Pat he ran the Five Points Bookshop, a popular social hub during its 13 years of operation, and he volunteered with the American Red Cross. He loved to travel, especially if there was an archaeological site to visit, and he played tennis until his knees gave out.
In addition to Pat, he is survived by three grandchildren—Erin Corley, Christopher Corley, and DaVaris Hatten—and a niece Beth Cartwright (Doug). He was predeceased by his daughter, Elyn.
Don will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind and generous man who was committed to the principles of social justice.
