Mrs. Doris Runell Tuttle

COLUMBIA Doris Runell Boyett Tuttle, 90, died Friday, August 1, 2014 at Providence Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dr. Walter Mack Burris will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Born October 30, 1923, in Columbus, Ga., she was a daughter of the late W. Robert and Mattie H. Boyett. She attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Ga., where she studied bookkeeping. She worked as a bookkeeper prior to her marriage to the late Richard Paul Tuttle in 1946. Mrs. Tuttle and her husband moved to Columbia in 1955 where she has resided since. After raising her children, she worked for Colonial Life Insurance Company and retired as an employee of the State of South Carolina. She loved to travel and did so extensively until it became too difficult in recent years. Mrs. Tuttle was a strong woman and a gentle and loving Christian who selflessly always did for others. She was an intelligent and talented woman who could solve any problem and mastered every art with perfection. She treated every person she met with respect and kindness and was loved by all who ever knew her. She will be sorely missed. Mrs. Tuttle is survived by her daughter, Nelda T. Smyrl; granddaughter, Teresa S. Plaag (Eric); grandson, Michael L. Smyrl (Amanda); great-grandson, Zachery T. Smyrl; brother, Donald Heyward Boyette (Norma); step great-grandchildren, Griffin Plaag, Cassie Earle and Alec Bibby; sisters-in-law, Willene Boyett and Bruce Rose; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Gloria Tuttle; a son, Richard M. Tuttle; sisters, Pauline Ethridge and Mae Pickett; and brothers, James Edward Boyett and Robert Douglas Boyett. The family suggests that memorials be made to Jackson Creek Baptist Church, 7778 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC 29223 or a charity of one’s choice.
