He was born in 1931 to Edward L. Lochstampfor and Ethel Davidson Lochstampfor of Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. While making plans to attend law school at the University of Richmond, Ed felt called to pursue foreign missions. He changed his plans, enrolled in Columbia Bible College in Columbia, South Carolina where he met his beautiful wife, Charlotte Crotts, and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating in 1953. From Columbia, the young couple moved to Philadelphia where Ed attended Faith Seminary for a year during which time he and Charlotte applied to the Sudan Interior Mission, now SIM International.
After a year in Paris studying French, Ed and Charlotte flew to French West Africa for what was to be 27 years of church-planting, Bible school teaching, and administrative ministry in Haute Volta, now Burkina Faso. They returned to the United States for an extended home assignment for family concerns during which time they served as campus recruitment representatives for SIM at Columbia International University, Columbia, SC. In June of 1986 they returned to West Africa to initiate SIM's work in Guinea, a country long-closed to missions.
Ed and Charlotte returned to South Carolina in 1992, retiring from active service 1996, but never from ministering to their community. Ed delighted in sharing his love for Jesus to anyone he met, but his greatest delight was his wife of 65 years; he was immensely proud of his 6 children.
Ed is survived by his wife Charlotte, sons Matt (Elysa), Tom (Petie), Susan (Daniel), Michael (Missy), Beth (David). He was predeceased by his oldest son Andy who, with his wife Lisa, gave him 3 beautiful grandchildren. He and Charlotte have 17 grandchildren, including 2 step-grandsons and one half-granddaughter, who were so very precious to him, and 8 great-grandchildren who brought a sense of wonder to his eyes. Also surviving are his brother, Reverend Doctor Edward L. Lochstampfor, Jr., of Waynesboro, Penn. His ministry covered 2 continents, many countries, touched the lives of many, and awarded him with a vast number of dear friends.
The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate and sensitive care provided by the staff at Palmetto Health Richland ER, and for the outpouring of love from extended family and friends across the country, across the globe.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Eau Claire Presbyterian Church. A family graveside will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m prior to the memorial service at the church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Memorials may be made to SIM International, 1838 Gold Hill Road, Fort Mill, SC 29708.
