Elaine G. Holmes

COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Elaine G. Holmes, 88, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2026 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, with a private family burial in the church cemetery. There will be a small reception at St. Peter’s Neglia Hall immediately following the Funeral Mass, where the family will greet guests and express their deepest appreciation for their support.

Mrs. Holmes died Friday, August 7, 2026. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rosaleen Graffis. She was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church since 1968.

Mrs. Holmes graduated from Ohio University in 1960, and from the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree in social work (MSW) in 1974.

She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity (UGA - Gamma Alpha Chapter 1984) where she graciously supported her daughter as Alpha Gamma Delta President in 1985-1986.

Mrs. Holmes was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family members. She absolutely loved the Gamecocks.

Surviving are her son, Mark T. Holmes (Jamie Brown); daughter, Georgia Lynne Holmes Doran; and grandson, James Richard Doran, IV.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. George R. Holmes, USC Professor Emeritus, USC School of Medicine.
