COLUMBIA - Services for Elizabeth “Bette” Jean Rogerson Auld, 76, will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Boyce Chapel, First Baptist Church, Columbia, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Mrs. Auld died Friday, May 25, 2018. Born in Darlington, September 8, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Lexious Algernon “L.A.” Rogerson and Mary Claudia Smith Rogerson. She was a graduate of Brooklyn Cayce High School and the University of South Carolina.
Upon graduation, she moved to Charleston and taught at Garret High School. When her beloved high school sweetheart, Fred, graduated from the Citadel, they married and moved to Anderson, where he taught and she was a substitute teacher. She and Fred shared an exceptional marriage of 53 years. The couple moved to Columbia in 1969, where Fred began his career at Eau Claire High School.
Bette was an active member of First Baptist Church, Columbia, and Wampee United Methodist Church, where she and Fred attended while in their beloved Cherry Grove. She taught 11th grade Sunday School for many years at First Baptist, leading and guiding multiple generations of young people. After “retiring” from Sunday School teaching, she began an active “card ministry” to help members of her Sunday School class and both churches celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and many other special events in their lives.
Bette was a wonderful chef. She worked for 25 years for the National Broiler Council. She developed and tested chicken recipes for publication through the Council to national publications. She appeared in multiple magazines and newspapers, even once holding a live chicken. She loved all her friends and family through her culinary talents.
Bette is survived by her husband of 53 years, Fred Marvin Auld, Jr.; children, Elizabeth “Beth” Auld Thrailkill of Cayce, and Fred “Trey” Marvin Auld (Annette) of Walhalla, South Carolina; grandchildren, Mary Alex Smith, Katie Beth Smith, Dru Auld, Lex Auld, Jackson Thrailkill, and Mary Delle Auld; siblings, Nancy Schmeing of Deep River, Ontario, Canada, Mary Ellen Rogerson (Dan Dworkin) of Columbus, N.C., and Lex Rogerson (Shirley Vickery) of Lexington. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom she loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Lottie Moon Offering for Foreign Missions and Samaritan’s Purse.
