Born October 2, 1942 in Collins Georgia, she was a farmer’s daughter, born to the late Howard Rufus and Eleene Collins Powell. She made her way to Columbia, South Carolina, where she graduated from USC with a degree in business administration, working for the long serving treasurer Grady Patterson. There she met her husband of 59 years, Ralph C. Robinson, Jr, who was working on his law degree. They lived for the next 60 years in the Five Points area.
Elyce was in the altar guild of Trinity Cathedral and Columbia Garden Club. She was a peacemaker, a gentle soul and the greatest mother anyone could ask for. Friends and neighbors sought her out for support. A lover of schnauzers, Elyce was always ready to cook a hamburger or make a pot of ham vegetable soup. She was renowned for her lightly sweet tea with mint.
Elyce was predeceased by Big Rob. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Robbie (Samantha), Heyward (Lee); daughter, Sarah Lyles (Morris); grandchildren, Elliott, Matthew, Carlisle, Elyce, Sadie, Allie and Alex; sister, Nicky Phillips; niece, Chris Lewis of Columbia; brothers, Don Powell and Rufus Powell of Georgia; sister-in-law, Bettie Anna Seibels (Grenville), of Columbia; brothers-in-law, Frank Robinson (Francis) of Columbia and John Heyward Robinson of Charleston.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 2025 at Trinity Cathedral, with a visitation from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. in Satterlee Hall. Private interment will take place in Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Trinity Cathedral or MSA Hospice.
